Article: Induction chemotherapy plus radiation compared with surgery plus radiation in patients with advanced laryngeal cancer.

Wolf GT, Fisher SG, Hong WK, et al. Induction chemotherapy plus radiation compared with surgery plus radiation in patients with advanced laryngeal cancer. N Engl J Med. 1991;324(24):1685-90.

  • Patients with T3/T4 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma
    • 3 groups: 1) Total Laryngectomy (TL)+ Adjuvant Radiation Therapy (RT) [current gold standard]  versus 2) Induction Chemotherapy with cisplatin/fluorouracil followed by RT (aka ChemoRT)
    • ChemoRT can have similar survival as TL+RT, and 64% of patients will have laryngeal preservation
    • The remaining ChemoRT patients underwent salvage laryngectomy
